National Cemetary
The National Cemetary was established February 1, 1867 on the north end of National Avenue. The original internments were 2,199 known and 1,051 unknown soldiers disinterred from various counties along the coast of North Carolina. There are currently over 7,500 internments.
Four states placed monuments at the cemetary to commemorate their Civil War dead: Connecticut (1898), New Jersey (1905), Massachusetts (1908), and Rhode Island (1909). The present lodge at the cemetary was constructed in 1916.
Riverside Graded School
Riverside School was built in 1922 on the corner of Avenue B and North Pasteur Street. The building is an Italian Renaissance Revival design and served as the community’s school for over 50 years. It is currently owned by the Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Riverside United Methodist Church
The church was built in 1920 and is located on the corner of Avenue A and North Pasteur Street. It is considered a “pivotal structure” in the National Register of Historic Places in that it is of Late Gothic Revival style. The octagonal sanctuary elevated above the rest of the building gives the structure a unique profile.
