Some of the Distinct Historic Homes in Riverside
The William R. Guion House
The Guion house was built in 1894, the first house built in Riverside. It is Riverside’s only Second Empire style house and one of the most impressive houses in the neighborhood. Restoration of the house began in 1986. It is located at 1203 National Avenue.
The D.M. Parker House
This exquisite Craftsman-style house was built in 1918 by David M. Parker, vice-president of Riverside’s S.B. Parker Company, one of the oldest businesses in New Bern. The house has many original features, both interior and exterior, making this an excellent example of its architectural style. The house underwent extensive renovations in 1996 and is one of the showplaces in Riverside.
The Whitehurst-Ward House
L.A. Whitehurst built this house in 1914 and it became the home of the chief clerk at J.L. Roper Lumber Company in 1920. Its high brick foundation, high hipped roof, and large one-over-one windows give this house an especially impressive look. A popular side-hall plan, the interior of the house has 10-foot ceilings and retains all of its original woodwork and plaster walls. It is located at 402 Avenue D.
